Thornham Cricket Club is proud to introduce its newly built A J Crook Pavilion, a magnificent enhancement to a truly beautiful and visually stunning cricket ground.
Opened in May 2014 by international cricket umpire John Holder in front of some 250 members and guests, the pavilion is the culmination of partnership funding from Valencia Communities Fund Environmental Company through the Landfill Communities Fund, Sport England's Inspired Facilities programme and Thornham CC's own fund-raising activities.
Prior to the new build, the home and visiting teams changed in what were known as the Beer Store and The Garage respectively, reflecting the makeshift nature of the "temporary" portacabin arrangement, which lasted 30 years.
That the project was completed on time and within budget is testament to the hard work and flexibility of the main contractor Woodgrove Developments, and the many members, friends and supporters of Thornham Cricket Club who, inspired by the external funding, committed over 4000 hours of volunteer time during winter months in order to make the project a reality. Volunteer work included foundations and drainage excavation, trenching and ducting for new electricity and water supplies, creating and laying 'Pattern Imprinted Concrete' patio, and all landscaping and decoration works. The monies saved through the use of 'volunteering' facilitated the purchase of electronic roller shutters and state of the art intruder alarm.
The pavilion contains modern changing, showering and toilet facilities together with a kitchen, equipment storage and a large community room complete with projector and large screen, plus two new Cornilleau Sport table tennis tables.
The facilities have been warmly welcomed by the local cricket leagues, players and visitors alike; in addition they are proving to be a community asset with the club hosting more and more community events including a monthly ladies group meeting.
