Crankwood Play Area

Since the 19th century, many villages in the Greater Manchester area were built off the back of the mining industry. This has meant that many commuities are situated in isolated places with limited access to amenities.

Crankwood village is one such isolated community. The existing play area, the only amenity for children in the village, was becoming dilapidated through heavy use and the equipment was becoming outdated, meaning some children were avoiding the park altogether.

In order to provide exciting aparatus, tackle antisocial behaviour with a place to congregate and physical stimulation, the local residents association canvassed the community for ideas about what they would like in the refurbished park.

The resulting successful application for funding meant that Crankwood now boasts a modern play park with vibrant equipment, with a nearby a BMX track and a teenage shelter for hanging out.
