The old 15th-century Ellon Castle overlooks the gardens that reached their current size and splendour in the early 18th century and were once considered one of the fi nest in Scotland, containing a unique collection of ancient English yew trees thought to be at least 500 years old.
Though still a popular destination for visitors, the structures and horticultural elements have been allowed
to fall into disrepair and neglect in recent times. Valencia Communities Fund was requested to fund £43,535 for the south and east wall inner
face repair, part of an overall project to restore a seven-acre high-walled garden and woodland site.
The future is looking good for the gardens with a three-phase plan set out to restore pathways, replant the east, south-west and
west terrace borders, stabilise the old Ellon Castle Ruin and Garden House and create a new visitor centre.
