River Rattlesden, named in part after the old Danish for boat, has long been an important vehicle for trade, travel and the occasional invasion.
Nowadays, the river has a far more serene use. In 2004 and again in 2006, the Museum of East Anglian Life applied to funding to Valencia Communities Fund through Suffolk Environmental Trust to transform the river into a nature and rambling site.
This was achieved through the installation of stock-proof fencing to enable grazing on the meadows, and the construction of pathways along the river. Interpretation and hides add interest and a place to rest on the walk, with the chance to see the famous Suffolk Punch also a highlight.
