Located in the City of Exeter’s Castle Quarter, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum is part of Exeter’s historical riches concentrated in a small area in the heart of the city. The Home to a Million Thoughts project had already seen the recent refurbishment of the museum, with more of its collections on display for free in newly-refurbished galleries and exhibition areas.
The interior complete, the focus of the RAMM Development Trust centred on the exterior of the building. Surrounding the museum are two parks; Northernhay, the oldest public park in Britain and Rougemont Gardens; as well as the ancient Roman city wall.
Thus began the Public Realm phase of the redevelopment, which aimed to connect these historic features together to enhance visitor experience and link these historical attractions to the museum itself.
The improvements to the area included interpretation boards, improved access and the creation of more green space, providing a corridor for visitors to enjoy Exeter's archaeological heritage.
